REDCap

The faculty hosts a web-based research data management tool called REDCap, which is quicker and more secure than paper-based. REDCap was developed specifically for use by clinicians and scientists, and has an intuitive interface that most find easy to adopt. We also provide training sessions, one-on-one project design consultation and helpdesk support. The Wits REDCap platform was launched in August 2012, joining an international consortium of over 1700 organisations, and we now have over 16000 user accounts , around 400 individual logins per day and over 1100 projects.

Why use RedCap?

The following are some key reasons why researchers should utilize REDCap for their research studies:

  • Secure
  • Full user authentication (log-on/password), customizable user rights restictions, real-time data validation, centralized & secure data storage, data de-identification options, and a full audit trails.
  • Web-based
  • Enter data or build your database from anywhere in the world over a secure web connection with authentication and data logging.
  • Fast
  • Quick project start-up. Clinical report forms can be implemented without the need for a programmer. Concept to production-level database is possible in less than one day.
  • Easy
  • Intuitive user interface and work flow, readily available online training materials make it easy to get started.
  • Full customizable
  • You are in total control of shaping your database.
  • Autonomous utilization
  • Research groups have complete autonomy and control to add new users and set several levels of specific user rights.
  • Data export
  • Seamless data downloads to common statistical packages (including SPSS, SAS, Stata, and R) and to the .csv (comma separated values) format, the most common import and export format for spreadsheets
    and databases.
  • Data import
  • Data import capability through Microsoft Excell Advanced features - File uploadng, auto-validation, branching logic, calculated fields etc.

ED & DataDoc

The team has development electronic health care systems, (ED and DataDoc) for the Wits affiliated hospitals, Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital, Helen Joseph Hospital and Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital.

Why use ED (Electronic Discharge)?

Benefits:

  • Reduce average length of stay as patients can get discharged faster
  • Reduces litigation bills by eliminating TTO medication errors
  • Get paid more for the care you have given with our accurate and automatic coding
  • Saves bed time and money by option to offload pharmacy dispensing to community pharmacy
  • Saves clinicians time by auto-filling in important data
  • Doctors will be able to get patients discharged in minutes from any computer or tablet in the hospital
  • Display the most relevant information for GPs and community carers with customisable specialty-specific templates

Why use DataDoc?

The following are some key reasons why clinicians use DataDoc:

  • Document Digitally
  • Replace your out of date paper records with an easy-to-use digital system.
  • Keep track of visit statistics
  • Clinical reports and statistics can be generated to give you the answers you need.
  • Patient Search
  • Find the patient you're looking for using their name, contact information, file number, ICD10 codes and other case data.
  • Easy and fast
  • Easy-to-use data management tool for clinicians.
  • Data import
  • Everyday, a massive amount of digital data points are generated from countless personal medical devices, such as blood glucose monitors and insulin pumps.
  • Data export
  • Manages weekly and monthly reports and therefore you can download them.
